With 256 members, the “Food Sharing AvB” WhatsApp group chat is an initiative established by the cohort of 2022 during the GC Sustainability class. In the group, students can give away food products that would have otherwise been wasted. For example, they can share leftovers from meals they prepared or find ingredients for dishes they plan on making. Students hired in local restaurants are able to sell leftover dishes for a lower price, preventing good to eat food from being discarded.
Why sustainable?
The initiative helps battle food waste by providing an easily accessible way for students put their unused products to good use. Because it is so easy to use it encourages members to take environmental action and participate in a dialogue aboutwaste. Additionally, it tightens the student community by providing its members a space to share and helping the building on Anna van Buerenplein feel like home.
Sustainable Cities and Communities: The chat helps prevent food waste, thus shaping a sustainable community.
Responsible Consumptionand Production: The initiative encourages students to consume responsibly by providing a space to get rid of food sustainably.
Climate Action: By posing an alternative to discarding foods, the chat contributes to the reduction of the waste overall and the CO2 and methane emissions that come with it.
