OV-Fiets is an initiative by the Dutch government to attempt to incorporate and increasingly standardize bicycles as public transport in the Netherlands. There are almost 300 locations in the country that provide access to public bicycles. The number of users has been increasing steadily.
Why sustainable?
OV-fiets advocates for an increased use of less polluting transport, with the aim being a move away from buses/trams and toward bicycles. Not only will it promote the use of bicycles as a result ofthe initiative, but the interest in building additional biking infrastructure may lead to an increase of general interest in cycling.
Good Health and Wellbeing: OV-fiets promotes exercise and ultimately improvement of wellbeing among residents.
Sustainable Cities and Communities: OV-fiets improves the overall sustainability of a community through its promotion of bike-intended infrastructure and commute.
Climate Action: OV-fiets promotes biking as a method of public transport which is an alternative to greater CO2 emitting transporation systems.
